Dodecyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride

Dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC) is a cationic surfactant with a wide range of applications and antimicrobial properties. Here are some key points about DDBAC:

  1. Physical Properties: Dodecyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride is a colorless or pale yellow viscous transparent liquid.
  2. Antimicrobial Capability: It has high efficacy in killing bacteria and controlling algae, with low toxicity, no cumulative toxicity, and is easily soluble in water.
  3. Application Fields: It is widely used in the circulating cooling water systems of the petroleum, chemical, power, and textile industries as a bactericide, algaecide, and sloughing agent, effectively controlling microbial growth in the systems, especially sulfate-reducing bacteria.
  4. Textile Industry Uses: In the textile printing and dyeing industry, DDBAC can be used as a bactericide, fungicide, softener, antistatic agent, emulsifier, and conditioner.
  5. Production Methods: Benzalkonium Chloride can be produced by various methods, such as the synthesis using dodecanol and dimethylamine under the action of a catalyst, or by reacting dodecyl bromide with dimethylamine and then reacting with benzyl chloride.
  6. Toxicity and Safety: BKC has relatively low toxicity but is classified as highly toxic. Its acute toxicity data includes oral-rat LD50: 400 mg/kg; intraperitoneal-rat LD50: 100 mg/kg. It has moderate irritancy to skin and eyes.
  7. Combustion Characteristics: DDBAC is flammable and produces toxic nitrogen oxides and chloride fumes when burned.
  8. Storage and Transportation: It should be stored in a ventilated, low-temperature, and dry environment, and appropriate fire extinguishers such as dry powder, foam, sand, carbon dioxide, and mist water should be used.

In addition, DDBAC has been studied for its antimicrobial properties, including its broad-spectrum antibacterial effects and synergistic effects with other chemicals. There are also studies on the impact of DDBAC on the growth and aggregation of methane hydrates in oil-water systems, as well as its use in disinfectants and potential hazards to non-target species.
